Plans for an Auckland memorial to honour Holocaust victims are edging closer.

The Auckland Holocaust Memorial Trust (AHMT) secured approval on Monday to build The Garden of Humanity memorial in the Domain.

Cobblestones from a street in Warsaw are at the centre of the design, a place where Polish Jews made a final stand against the Nazis in 1943.

“There are many examples in history of hatred towards groups, and in particular of anti-Semitism against the Jews,” AHMT chairman and Holocaust survivor Bob Narev, 85, said.

“But there has never been a state-organised attempt to eliminate a whole group of people as the Nazis did.”
