The aim is to lift spirits during the winter period between Tisha B’Av and Rosh Hashanah, says Mona Williams, who is the organiser of Temple Sinai’s 59th birthday party next Sunday 12 August.

“Next year Wellington’s Progressive Synagogue will celebrate 60 years and it will be a bigger occasion but this year the birthday party will be festive and fun.”

The centrepiece for the party will be the photographs taken during the last 59 years.

Mona says the photos coming in are of past and present people. “It doesn’t have to be a barmitzvah or batmitzvah but just of ordinary occasions at Temple Sinai.”

One photo, pictured above, shows a much younger David Esterman and Mona herself. The other people in the photo are unknown.

People are asked to bring their favourite dish to the birthday celebration. There will also be Israeli dancing and games.

“This will all add to the communal spirit of the occasion,” Mona says. “It’s about being together.”
