Canterbury Historical Association – Fourth Meeting for 2019:

Mikaela Hood: Holocaust Education & Remembrance 75 Years On
As the world enters a new era of Holocaust remembrance, one without the survivors, should we be concerned with the state of Holocaust education? Do the words “We shall never forget” and “We remember” apply to society today?
Internationally, there is concern regarding the lack of education and growing ignorance of the Holocaust. In reaction to this, Yad Vashem, the World Holocaust Remembrance Center, is taking a leading role in promoting Holocaust education.
This paper will examine the state of Holocaust education in the world today and shed light on New Zealand’s connection to the Holocaust.
Mikaela Hood is currently a teacher in the Villa Maria College History department and a committee member of the CHA. She was awarded a scholarship to study at Yad Vashem’s International school for Holocaust Studies. She recently returned from Israel as a graduate of the International Seminar for Educators.
