“This is a life changing adventure from which your knowledge and understanding of the Shoah will be enhanced in ways you cannot imagine.”
BACKGROUND
Since 2013, the Holocaust Centre , in conjunction with Yad Vashem, has sent between 25-30 New Zealand teachers every two years* to attend an intensive study seminar at the International School for Holocaust Studies at Yad Vashem in Jerusalem, Israel. Generous scholarships are given to each teacher to enable them to attend.
The programme includes:
- Pedagogy and theories on safely teaching the Holocaust to students
- Connections between the actions of victims, perpetrators, and bystanders before, during, and after the Holocaust
- Curriculum from experts in Holocaust education
- Meeting with Holocaust survivors where possible
- Connections with the Aotearoa New Zealand Histories curriculum & Social Studies Refresh curriculum
- Connections with the new NCEA standards in History, Social Studies, English, Media Studies, and Religious Studies
These educators bring home, into their classrooms, the many lessons and teaching ideas learned from world-leading experts in the field of Holocaust education. They also experience Jerusalem and other areas of Israel.
Beyond the seminar, Yad Vashem graduates become part of a close-knit alumni and continue as supported leaders in Holocaust education.
The seminar is named in honour of Inge Woolf z”l, the Holocaust Centre’s founding Director who was the driving force behind enabling New Zealand teachers to learn at Yad Vashem.
