Israel has a new Ambassador to New Zealand, the Cook Islands, Samoa, and Tonga. He is His Excellency Ran Yaakoby.

Prior to his appointment to New Zealand, Ambassador Yaakoby served as the Director for Combating Antisemitism and for Holocaust Remembrance at the Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Over the course of his career, he has served in a number of diplomatic postings. These included Minister-Counsellor to Germany (2011-2016), Deputy Ambassador to Sweden (2003-2007), and Deputy Consul General & Charge’ d’affairs to Brazil (1996-2001).

Ambassador Yaakoby has a BA in Political Science and Urban Studies from Tel-Aviv University and an MA in Conflict Resolution, Research and Management from the Swiss Center – Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

He is married to Debora Yaakoby and they have two children.

Ambassador Yaakoby takes over the role of ambassador from Dr Itzhak Gerberg, who was Ambassador for four years from 2016. He is now in Wellington, but has yet to present his credentials to New Zealand’s Governor-General.
