January 27 is International Holocaust Remembrance Day.
As survivors dwindle in numbers and revisionist narratives become part of the main stream in some countries, this annual commemoration takes on added importance. This year’s ceremonies are being held in the shadow of an increasing tsunami of hate not seen since the years leading up to the Shoah.
One of the very few positive things worth remembering about those dark times is the kindertransport by which approximately 10,000 mostly Jewish children were rescued mainly from Germany, Austria and Czechoslovakia in the short period before war broke out. These children, ranging in age from babies to teenagers, were sent by their parents to safety in the UK. In most cases these children would never see their parents again.
To mark the 85th anniversary of this dramatic rescue a most moving documentary has been released which traces the journeys of three surviving “kinder.” One of them, Walter Bingham [pictured], lives in Israel and is 101 years old. He is in the Guinness Book of Records as the oldest active journalist.
