Abbas declares a thousand no’s for peace with Israel, Nancy Pelosi rips up Trump’s State of the Union speech and the Corona Virus causes mayhem throughout the world… writes Michael Kuttner.

In the midst of all these lost opportunities and chaos, Israel forges ahead with more innovations and good news. Our politicians may be in election mode but our scientists, researchers and citizens are focused on more positive achievements.

NO MORE DIALYSIS

A groundbreaking study has shown that it is possible to rejuvenate damaged kidneys and improve their function, a procedure that could reverse chronic kidney disease, offsetting the need for dialysis. This is the first breakthrough in decades to combat this disease, often precipitated by hypertension and diabetes, and which affects a whopping 10% of the population worldwide.

The study was conducted by Professor Benjamin Dekel, head of Pediatric Nephrology and the Pediatric Stem Cell Research Institute in the Edmond and Lily Safra Children’s hospital at Sheba Medical Center, and published this week in the prestigious Cell Reports medical journal.

One of the most significant aspects of the discovery is that the newly developed technology uses the patient’s own cells, thereby circumventing the need for immuno suppression as well as problems associated with immune rejection.

Thus far, the method has been tested on mice, where the cells have shown their ability to generate new renal structures, associated with an ability to be retained for a long time once administered into the host kidney. The treated mice displayed improved renal function.

By focusing on improving and stabilizing renal function, this treatment has the potential to help millions of patients with chronic kidney disease and who have yet to require dialysis treatment.

ANOTHER TECHNOLOGICAL FIRST

Israel is undoubtedly among the leading nations in developing technology to combat terror attacks. Even those countries which never lose a moment to criticize and censure the Jewish State for defending itself rush to acquire Israeli knowhow when it is necessary.

HELPING LONE SOLDIERS

Every year thousands of lone soldiers without family in Israel serve in the IDF. They do have a support system in place to help them cope. However, when they are discharged they are on their own and this can cause major problems. Now steps are underway to rectify this hitherto unaddressed problem.

BREAKING NEW GROUND

A quiet revolution has been taking place in Israel among the Charedi (Ultra Orthodox) sector of the population. Faced with economic realties and an increasing desire among young men and women to improve their secular skills and thus have the opportunity of obtaining well paid employment there has been a slow but steady increase in those acquiring opportunities for making a decent living.

There are already some who have joined the IDF, some with the support of their families and others joining the ranks of lone soldiers as their families have disowned them. Many are working in hi-tech and others are looking to go where no Charedi man or woman has ever gone before.

Watch this short video and learn about the inspiring life story of one such young man and how he is singlehandedly helping others to follow his pioneering path.
