They’ve only been open for six months, putting in 12 hour days and battling a dire Wellington central city market – but with $2.50 coffee and kosher food, this deli has already built a loyal band of customers.

The Bond Street Deli, on, you guessed it, Wellington’s Bond St, is a kosher deli specialising in cured fish, artisan breads, fresh salads, baked goods, bagels and a quite possibly the cheapest cuppa joe in the city.

Owner Ian Kerry said it was similar to a New York deli “but with a distinct antipodean twist”.

“Because we are certified kosher and serve products with meat such as chicken matzoh ball soup, beef brisket on occasion and beef hotdogs, everything we produce must therefore under kosher law also be dairy-free.”

Kosher foods must comply with a strict set of dietary rules in Judaism.
