Overlooking the city on a chilly June afternoon, Wellington’s Ellice Park was the backdrop for a peaceful ceremony commemorating the extraordinary life of a young girl who lived on the other side of the world, more than 70 years ago.

The life of Anne Frank was remembered today on what would have been her 90th birthday, with the planting of 15 kowhai trees to commemorate the 15 years of her short life.

The tree-planting ceremony began with a meeting of culture: a M?ori blessing and waiata complemented a Jewish prayer, before the kowhai saplings were planted. Seventy-five trees will be planted later to commemorate the 75 years Frank did not live.
