By-election candidate Karl Tiefenbacher [pictured] has backed out of a debate hosted by unions at the last minute, saying the questions were slanted towards “a Green manifesto”.
Along with Green candidate Geordie Rogers, Tiefenbacher is one of the leading contenders to fill Wellington Central MP Tamatha Paul’s vacant seat on the Wellington City Council.
Unions Wellington ‒ the Wellington branch of the Council of Trade Unions ‒ sent candidates a mix of questions ahead of tonight’s debate.
Topics included Te Tiriti, funding the pipes, the sale of airport shares, the use of citizens’ assemblies, the rights of transgender people and whether the council should boycott Israeli products because of the crisis in Gaza. (Read the questions in full below.)
Tiefenbacher announced on Tuesday he would not attend, saying the questions did not appear to be relevant.
