Dan Shamir is stepping down as head coach of the New Zealand Breakers, with his chief assistant Mody Maor to step into the top role for the next Australian NBL season.
Stuff ‘s initial story on Shamir’s decision to step away after three turbulent years with the club was confirmed by the Breakers late on Wednesday. It follows the worst season in the organisation’s history, with the Kiwi outfit finishing in the wooden-spoon spot with a 5-23 record after being required to play the entire 2021-22 campaign on the road in Australia.
Shamir said his decision came down to family reasons. “The past two seasons living in Melbourne have taken a toll on my wife and kids,” he said. “It is time for me and my family to go home now, but this place will forever be part of our lives and identity.”
The 47-year-old Israeli came in as a well-credentialed, and highly touted, coach who had been a key part of several successful clubs in Europe. But his time at the Breakers has been mired in under-achievement amid major difficulties caused by the pandemic over the last two years.
