A Wellington bakery has come up nearly tops in a nationwide competition to find the best hot cross bun.

Nada Bakery, a family-run business with shop outlets in Tawa and Johnsonville, clinched second place in the 2023 Great NZ Hot Cross Bun Competition with its traditional hot cross bun.

The buns are spiced with cassia, ginger, nutmeg, pimento, coriander, cloves and cardamom, with pre-soaked sultanas, currents and mixed peel.

The dough was bulk fermented to develop a more intense flavour and were finished with a yuzu and apricot glaze.
