Media release: Embassy of Israel in NZ…
The vessels of the so-called Hamas-Sumud Flotilla have been safely intercepted by the Israeli Navy in full accordance with international law. All passengers are being transferred peacefully to Israel. They are safe, in good health, and will be processed for return to their countries of origin.
We wish to remind everyone that a lawful naval blockade has been in place off the coast of Gaza since 2009, in order to prevent weapons smuggling to terrorist organizations. Since the 7 October massacre, the importance of this security measure has only increased, as terror organizations continue to seek ways to smuggle arms into Gaza by sea. This blockade has been recognized as legal by the United Nations’ Palmer Report (2011) and by international maritime law. Israel is entitled to enforce the blockade, including in international waters, when vessels openly declare their intention to breach it.
Humanitarian aid for Gaza continues to be transferred regularly through approved channels. Israel, together with international partners, has repeatedly offered lawful mechanisms for any aid carried by the flotilla to be delivered via established ports, including Ashkelon and Cyprus. These offers were rejected by the flotilla organizers. Their refusal demonstrates that this initiative was never humanitarian in nature, but rather a deliberate provocation orchestrated with Hamas’ support.
Israel appreciates the recent calls by Greece, Italy, Spain, and others urging the flotilla organizers to halt their course and transfer any aid through proper channels. These appeals highlight the broad international recognition that genuine humanitarian assistance must not be exploited for political theatre. Our inspection of the vessels confirmed this: no aid was found on board, further underlining that the flotilla was not about humanitarian relief but about provocation and political demonstration.
Israel will continue to safeguard its citizens and its coastline, while ensuring that humanitarian supplies reach civilians in Gaza through established and legal means.
