Prime Minister Christopher Luxon says the “conditions aren’t there right now” for the Government to recognise Palestinian statehood.
The comment came after Foreign Minister Winston Peters told the United Nations on Saturday morning (NZT) that New Zealand would not take that decision at this time.
“There are New Zealanders that will be disappointed by this decision,” Luxon said responding to the address, “but equally, there are New Zealanders that support this decision, and you know, there are strongly held feelings and views on all sides of this debate”.
“None of this is great,” he said.
“We got a conflict that’s been long running and causing so much humanitarian suffering and a catastrophe in the Middle East.”
