As Winston Peters prepares to attend a major UN meeting, the Government has a major decision to make about diplomatic recognition of Palestine.

Most weeks, the PM’s regular post-Cabinet press conferences follow a distinct pattern; a game within a game.

After making the Government’s desired announcement of the week, Christopher Luxon bats away attempts to uncover the other issues he and his ministers discussed with a proclamation that “we don’t talk about what we talk about at Cabinet”. It’s a (mostly) understandable response, but one that may be pushed to breaking point on Monday afternoon.

One major issue is certain to be discussed – whether New Zealand should join a suite of other nations in formally recognising the state of Palestine when Foreign Minister Winston Peters travels to the United Nations General Assembly in New York next week.
