[On 11 October 2018 at 6.00pm at AUT City Campus]

Hate speech and free speech have been hugely controversial topics in New Zealand during 2018, and will be the subject of free public lectures in Wellington on 10 October and Auckland on 11 October.

This is as part of “At the Forefront – Human Rights Speaker Series” – an initiative of The Holocaust Centre of New Zealand.

High profile historian, Professor Paul Moon, from Auckland University of Technology, will explore the nature of hate speech and how it intersects with free speech.

He will canvass a range of issues associated with hate speech, exploring the impacts of free speech and how it operates within society.

“Hate speech and free speech are amongst the most important challenges our society face, but they are not especially well-understood,” says Moon.

“There has been an increasing trend of knee-jerk reactions to issues of rights to speech, with little understanding of how these rights actually function.”

Professor Moon is a member of the Free Speech Coalition and specialises in the psychology and philosophies of British colonisation in the 19th century.
