Invercargill City Council in New Zealand has adopted procurement restrictions targeting companies on a United Nations database relating to Israeli settlements, with the Palestine Solidarity Network Aotearoa describing the vote as an “important step” towards BDS against Israel.
The description marks a shift from how the proposal was presented to councillors before the vote.
PSNA representative Bryan Clearwater had previously told the council: “In short, this is not a sanction, this is not a boycott of Israel. It’s a narrow measure to keep our backyard clean.”
After Tuesday’s vote, PSNA called Invercargill the seventh New Zealand local body to adopt similar measures “sanctioning Israel”.
“By itself, the Invercargill resolution won’t force Israel to give Palestinians equal rights, but it is an important step for this country to apply BDS (Boycotts, Divestment and Sanctions) to Israel,” PSNA spokesperson Rinad Tamimi said.
