The Labour Party says Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has “dragged his heels” amid coalition squabbles and must recognise the state of Palestine, as the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia all announced their decision to recognise it.

But Luxon has again refused to speak of Cabinet’s preliminary decision on the recognition of Palestine, instead insisting Cabinet would make a final decision on Friday before Foreign Minister Winston Peters reveals this at the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Speaking to reporters on Monday afternoon, Luxon described the UK-Canada-Australia decision to recognise Palestine ‒ after each country’s leaders publicly discussed their view in recent months ‒ as a “fait accompli”.

“They came with their full and final decision, announced that to the public as a fait accompli as to what their position actually is.
