“Palestinian civilians cannot pay the price of Israel trying to defeat Hamas”, Prime Minister Christopher Luxon said on Monday, after Israeli strikes hit the southern Gaza city of Rafah, where more than a million Palestinians have fled.
Luxon was asked about the strikes on Monday afternoon, as international concern mounted and US President Joe Biden warned Israel needed a “credible and executable” plan to protect civilians.
Foreign Minister Winston Peters was speaking to the Israeli Government “to convey that position very clearly, that our concern is they do not proceed with operations in Rafah”, Luxon said.
“We do not want to see Israel going into Rafah where there’s 1.5 million civilians sitting there without making sure that there are really clear steps to support and protect them.”
