Media release: NZ Jewish Council…
The New Zealand Jewish Council welcomes with deep relief and hope the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas announced by President Trump today.
After so many months of anguish, loss and uncertainty, we are profoundly grateful for this moment of respite and the promise it brings for both Israelis and Palestinians, said Ben Kepes, spokesperson for the New Zealand Jewish Council.
“We are hopeful that the coming days will see all remaining hostages safely returned to their families and that rebuilding can begin for the people of Gaza under the governance of those who have their best interests at heart.”
The Council has consistently affirmed that Israel has the right to exist in peace and security, just as Palestinians have the right to dignity, safety and self-determination, he said.
“It is our fervent hope that this deal marks the end of both people’s suffering and a new beginning – one of a sustainable peace.”
Kepes, added: “This is a moment that calls for empathy, not ego; for bridge-building, not posturing. We urge all New Zealanders, and indeed all who care about peace, to set aside divisive rhetoric and unite in celebrating a step toward reconciliation. The time for healing must begin.”
The New Zealand Jewish Council calls on the international community to support the creation of conditions that allow both Israelis and Palestinians to have a better future and live free from fear, violence and hatred.
“We pray that this ceasefire holds,” said Kepes. “For the hostages, for the bereaved, for those who have lost so much, and for the generations to come — may this be the foundation of a secure and just future for all and a new Middle East.”
