One of the most important precepts in Judaism is showing respect for one’s parents and the elderly.
The fact that I have well and truly qualified for the latter category was brought home to me the other day. As I was schlepping three heavy bags out to the garbage container on the street two high school boys rushed up to me and insisted on taking the bags from me. They then proceeded to dispose of them and inquired whether there was anything else I needed help with.
I do not know whether this is an “only in Israel” experience but it certainly is a lovely example of fulfilling a religious mitzvah.
