This forthcoming Rosh Hashanah in Israel will be surreal.
As we gather in Synagogues and local minyanim the piercing sounds of the Shofar are likely to be accompanied by the wailing of air raid sirens warning us of incoming rockets, missiles or drones. In ancient times the blasts of the Shofar alerted the Israelites to approaching danger. How appropriate therefore that today we are experiencing the exact same situation.
The lesson could not be clearer.
In addition to a spiritual wake up call, these shrill notes also remind us to be prepared to strengthen and defend our brethren wherever they may be situated.
