By Juliet Moses (guest post) on Kiwiblog…

I recently heard Max Harris, the Labour Party candidate for Tamaki, speak at an event. He introduced himself as having a “strong moral compass”.

That’s a bit odd, I thought, and more than a bit self-righteous.  Sometimes you hear someone describing someone else that way, but not self-identifying as such. I decided it warranted more investigation.

That’s pretty easy to do with Harris. There is no dearth of material. Books, papers, speeches, open letters and opeds he has authored, articles and profiles about him, and, until he deleted it on entering politics, an X (formerly known as Twitter) account. More on that later.

Before late 2023 I was vaguely aware of Harris. I knew he was a Wellington-based barrister who was the campaign manager for the late Efeso Collins when he ran for mayor.

I knew (because it was on his X profile) that he had been an economic policy adviser to John McDonnell, the senior British Labour politician who was Jeremy Corbyn’s Shadow Chancellor.
