War, famine, hostages. New Zealand recognising Palestine as a state will not make a difference to the Israel-Hamas war that is destroying Gaza and its people.

So why do it?

Foreign Minister Winston Peters flew for New York yesterday partly to answer this question, as the United Nations General Assembly prepares to meet, Israel proceeds with an offensive on Gaza City, and credible claims of genocide mount.

Late in the week, he will take the stage at the General Assembly and announce New Zealand’s decision.

The issue has been explored in earnest, and Peters is said to maintain an open mind. New Zealand diplomats posted across the world have been tasked with discussing recognition of Palestine with countries making the move, to report back to Wellington.
