Wellington Phoenix have added some Premier League firepower to their squad for the upcoming A-League season by signing former Brighton and Hove Albion striker Tomer Hemed on a 12-month contract.

The Israeli international helped Brighton win promotion to the Premier League in 2017 and marquee-level forward they have been searching for since Englishman Gary Hooper departed for India at the end of the last campaign.

The Phoenix’s interest in Hemed was first reported by Stuff in October.

“I always give everything I have to help the team win the game,” Hemed said. “I know my job is to score goals and to score as many as I can, but I also focus on making the key pass and making big tackles; whatever they need me to do to win.”

The 33-year-old touched down in Australia on Monday and will spend the next two weeks in managed isolation before linking up with his new team-mates at their temporary base in Wollongong.
