Foreign Minister Winston Peters has criticised Deputy Prime Minister David Seymour for saying recognition of Palestine should not occur without release of Israeli hostages.

“That is not the Government’s position. The Government’s position is articulated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs. That’s the agreed situation, and for the second time someone is talking out of this field,” Peters said, on Wednesday afternoon.

But Seymour said he was expressing the ACT Party view on the issue, and the Government position – when it is reached – may differ.

“It’s a fairly normal position in MMP [government], I mean, Winston has been in MMP since I was in form two, so I wouldn’t have thought it’d be unusual for him,” he said.

“I also said … the Government position is under active consideration, it will be announced by, I think my exact words were, the right minister at the right time.”
