An Israeli government minister has hit out at New Zealand and Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, after he said Israel’s prime minister had “lost the plot” following his “utterly appalling” bombing of Gaza.

Israel’s deputy minister of foreign affairs, Sharren Haskel, hit back at Luxon’s comments – saying New Zealand’s biggest threat was “a possum” while Israel faced “a jihadist death cult”.

But Luxon was defiant on Thursday, and stood by his criticism of Israel. He said many nations had the same view as him and New Zealand.

“What I’m expressing is an immense frustration from the global community. You’ve seen the global community shift. We have been friends of Israel for a long period of time,” he said.

But Luxon said he and other world leaders were “increasingly frustrated” that Israel was ignoring pleas from the rest of the world to let more aid into Gaza and had continued to bomb the small region.
