Rebecca Margolis | Jews on screen: Shtisel and Unorthodox

Were you captivated by Akiva’s emotional struggle in Season 3 of Shtisel? Did you watch Esty’s journey from Brooklyn to Berlin in Unorthodox? Ultra-Orthodox Jews are not your mainstream TV protagonists, and yet these shows have captivated Jewish and non-Jewish audiences across the globe. How authentic are these portrayals of Jews on screen? What makes their stories so compelling? Join Rebecca Margolis, scholar of Jewish migration and cultural history at Monash University, for some TV analysis.

Ittay Flescher | The State of Israel v Benjamin Netanyahu

In what is arguably one of the most important court cases in the history of Israel, Bibi is on trial for corruption. Plus61J Media’s Jerusalem Correspondent Ittay Flescher will take you through all the charges, Netanyahu’s defence arguments and how the trial has already impacted the politics of Israel in a dramatic fashion.

Amy-Jill Levine | How and why Jews and Christians read scripture differently

The Jewish Tanakh and the Christian Old Testament differ in translation, punctuation, definitions, theology, emphasis and even canonical order. How and why do Jews and Christians hold different interpretations of Isaiah 7.14 (pregnant woman or virginal conception), Isaiah’s “suffering servant,” the Garden of Eden (“original sin” or “original opportunity”), views of the land of Israel, the role of Law, and Psalm 22? Why do our interpretive differences matter so much?

Tuvia Book | Blessed is the match: the life of Hannah Szenes

Learn about the life of Hannah Szenes, Zionist pioneer, poet and paratrooper who was executed by the Hungarian Arrow Cross – Nazi collaborators – at the age of 23. This session will examine Hannah’s motivation for her heroic selfless actions, through her own words and through recollections of those who knew her. Decades after her tragic early death her story and her poems continue to inspire.

“A voice called, and I went.
I went, for a voice called.”

(Hannah Szenes, 1921-1944)

Sunday 13 June 5pm A Limmud Oz musical journey from Sepharad to Brooklyn

An uplifting opening to Limmud Oz 2021, with two musical acts that will transport you from Sepharad to Brooklyn. Kim Cunio and Heather Lee will perform their historically informed musically adventurous Sephardi and Mizrahi repertoire. Miron Williams and Aliza Waxman of Brooklyn Bear bring us intimate folk, dreamy indie pop and world music experiences, leading us on a journey to an oak cottage fireplace, welcoming us to the warm, flickering embrace of their divine sounds.

Monday 14 June 8pm CHUTNEY – a Klezmer Kabaret

Klezmer band with a twist, CHUTNEY presents a hot and spicy mix of original compositions plus modern takes on traditional dance tunes. Sydney musicians Ben Adler (violin), Paul Khodor (keyboard), Ben Samuels (clarinet), Yiss Mill (percussion) and Oscar Gross (bass), along with musical theatre performer extraordinaire, Doron Chester, traverse styles from gypsy jazz to tango, folk to rock, classical to funk, east to west. With generous helpings of violin schmaltz, blisteringly fast solos, driving rhythms and toe tapping classics, there’s no better way to send off Limmud Oz 2021!
