From 2027, New Zealand students will formally study the Holocaust as part of the Year 10 Social Sciences curriculum. That is an important development.
At a time when knowledge of the Holocaust cannot be assumed, ensuring that young New Zealanders understand what happened to Europe’s Jews, how it happened and where unchecked hatred can lead is plainly worthwhile.
But new research from the Anti-Defamation League suggests an important question for New Zealand educators.
Will we teach students only what antisemitism did, or will we also teach them how antisemitism works?
The distinction matters.
