Pro-Palestinian protesters demanding sanctions against Israel have disrupted the ACT Party’s South Island election campaign launch in Christchurch, just days after other protesters repeatedly interrupted a public meeting addressed by Prime Minister Christopher Luxon.
Three women calling for sanctions against Israel interrupted ACT leader David Seymour’s speech on Friday night, but their protest was quickly drowned out by jeers from the hundreds of ACT supporters in the audience.
The response contrasted with the repeated interruptions at the National Party meeting earlier in the week, where protesters succeeded in disrupting proceedings around half a dozen times.
Security was tight at the ACT campaign launch at Christchurch Town Hall, with bags searched as people entered and several individuals removed before speeches began. Police were also present outside the Town Hall, where pro-Palestinian demonstrators gathered.
